CLASS follows the dramatic dynamics of this upmarket school and the tumultuous events that follow.
Review Of Class:
It was so good.
It showed the stark reality of India: the division of ‘class’ between rich and poor. Having lived in Delhi and having known such young kids, I could see them in the characters on screen. They are so tone deaf to the realities of the less fortunate. It isn’t feel a good series where the underdog succeed but that’s how life is. Power, money and influence play a major role to determine how you think, and also lets you get away with almost everything. I don’t think it’ll ‘resonate’ with a majority of the 11th and 12th standard going kids in India, as most of the middle class is stuck in entrance exam preparations to built a stable future (which isn’t bad). But among the rich households, their lives revolve around the first world problems, debauchery and hedonism. I liked that they showed casteism as well which is quite specific to India, which conveys a message that sometimes ‘class’ is decided (by society) from the moment you’re born. Other issues like LGBTQ, drugs, parental pressures, teenage pregnancy are also shown.
The cinematography is good, the colour palette also playing a role to show ‘class’; a division of rich and poor. The former has a cool tone, shades of blue, gold, pink that reminds one of luxury and comfort, aligning with what the rich represent while the latter is stuck with warm, grainy, yellow hues; suffocating and uncomfortable, aptly showing the world of non existent luxury and people living meal to meal.
However I feel that the colours can be bettered and more convincing and stark and instead of subtle, should be more on the face as how it is in real life.
Overall the sound design and plot are the strengths and kudos the newcomers for the terrific performances. I wish people would focus on these new talents and fresh faces rather than the talentless nepotism gang whom the paparazzi hounds every hour. Interestingly tho, that is ‘class’ difference in itself.
Thus in conclusion, it’s as real as it gets, definitely not a feel good and some great performances.One thing I want to mention is that the characters reminded me so much of the people I knew, all of them have studied in ‘prestigious’ schools in Delhi and rest of India. They mostly have zero moral compass. I wish there were more shows like these, showing the reality of the youth, not ‘Student of the Year’ type where everyone is rooting for the leads.
